Disclosure: I’m an affiliate for SMGB. I took the course, and I may earn a commission if you enroll through my links — at no extra cost to you. Honest opinion only.
« Why pay for an SMGB course when everything is free on YouTube? » It’s a fair question — I asked it myself before buying. So here’s an honest comparison between the free-YouTube route and the Self Made Girl Boss Academy, from someone who has done both.
I’m Sonia, e-commerce entrepreneur since 2014 and a TOSA-certified WordPress webmaster. I’m an affiliate of SMGB (created by Joanna), not its founder — so I have no reason to pretend YouTube is useless. It isn’t. But it has a hidden cost.
The real cost of « free » YouTube
YouTube is amazing for individual tips. The problem isn’t quality — it’s structure. You get puzzle pieces from 50 different creators, half of them outdated, with no idea which order to follow. The typical result:
- You spend 12–24 months assembling scattered advice
- You apply conflicting or obsolete tactics
- You burn out and quit before it clicks
« Free » costs you your most expensive resource: time. And time lost is momentum lost.
What the SMGB (Self Made Girl Boss) Academy actually teaches
Where SMGB earns its place is digital marketing with a clear path. Instead of random videos, you get a sequence:
- How to choose and validate a digital offer
- How to grow on social media and build a real audience
- How to sell your own digital products and earn through affiliation
- Modern methods (AI, current content strategy), updated over time
Plus the two things YouTube can’t give you: an accountable community of 6,800+ members, and — since July 2026 — recognized CPD accreditation (200 points).
YouTube vs SMGB: the honest verdict
Use YouTube if you have unlimited time, high discipline, and you enjoy piecing things together yourself. It genuinely can work.
Choose SMGB if you’d rather follow a proven, structured path and get to your first sales faster — and you value the community and accreditation. At 445€, the question isn’t « free vs paid. » It’s « how much is a year of trial-and-error worth to you? »
My take after doing both
I learned the technical side on my own, the hard way, with costly mistakes. What actually moved the needle was following a structured method instead of hoarding tutorials. If I’d had that from day one, I’d have saved years.

Free YouTube teaches you tactics. SMGB teaches you a system. For digital marketing, the system is usually what gets you paid.
